Oxidative stress happens when free radicals and oxygen combine and your body is unable to detoxify them.
But here is brief overview of free radicals: Free radicals are unpaired electrons, meaning they are unstable, that come into contact with your body/skin and look for another electron to pair with. This process can cause major stress and damage, the unstable "free-radical" electrons pair with healthy electrons in our body and then create a cycle of unstable electrons looking for a new pair. Some free-radicals we are constantly exposed to are UV radiation and air pollution -- both generate free radicals that come into contact with our skin.
When the free radicals and oxygen combine and are too strong for our body to fight against, it results in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress typically causes skin damage like premature aging, uneven skin tone and texture, and sometimes can even break down proteins. But a lifestyle full of antioxidants can help to reduce the effects of free radicals on your body!
A great example to think of is an apple, when you cut an apple it is exposed to oxygen and turns brown (oxidation). But using things like lemon juice, which naturally contains antioxidants, helps to slow down the oxidation process. This can happen with your skin, obviously not as extreme or as quickly as an apple, but antioxidants can also help your body fight off these stressors.
You can get antioxidants not only through a healthy diet and overall lifestyle but through topical personal care products as well. Some major ingredients you want to look for in your products are Vitamin A, C and E -- all these contain antioxidants that can help protect your skin.
