Simply Sustainable: What Ingredients are Good for Acne?

Acne can be a problem for all skin types, those annoying pesky blemishes that pop up -- sometimes during the most inopportune times! There are endless products that are supposed to target acne but they can be full of toxic chemicals that are just drying your skin out and potentially causing harm to your overall health. 

Looking for some natural remedies for acne? Look for products that contain these ingredients or try some at remedies! 

  1. Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil has natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties meaning that it helps fight any inflammation and stops the growth of bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. It can help calm redness, swelling and even help reduce the visibility of scarring. It is a very concentrated essential oil so it should be diluted for direct skin use -- try mixing it with a carrier like jojoba oil or aloe and use a spot treatment on blemishes!
  2. Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil not only possesses healing properties like wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and moisturize but can also act as an antibacterial. Oils do not support the growth of bacteria. Few studies have found that jojoba oil can be beneficial in treating acne and skin lesions. You can use it as a carrier oil for spot treatment with ingredients like tea tree oil!
  3. Aloe Vera: From the Aloe Vera plant you can use the clear gel like substance in the leaves in many ways, even to eat! Aloe vera has soothing properties which makes it popular for after-sun use, but it has antibacterial properties as well that can help with acne. You can use aloe vera in place of a facial cleanser or use it as overnight spot treatment (often mixed with tea tree oil) and wash it off in the morning. 
  4. Honey: Honey has great anti-inflammatory properties to fight against swelling and redness. It is no cure-all for acne but can help to reduce the look of acne by calming the irritation and redness. Try using it as spot treatment on blemishes! It can help with dry skin and peeling too. 
  5. Green Tea: Your skin produces sebum, or an oily substance to protect and moisturize your skin. Sometimes there can be an overproduction of sebum and it can clog your pores and cause blemishes. Green tea can help neutralize the production of sebum, it also is a very strong anti-oxidant so it fights against free-radicals that could be causing acne. 
  6. Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple Cider Vinegar is a popular ingredient for many health trends! A lot of people consume it to help with issues like lowering blood sugar and even weight loss. But it can also be applied topically to help with skincare. More research still needs to be done but it has been linked to helping acne. If using, make sure to dilute it with water before you apply to the skin -- if you have super sensitive skin it may burn and it will likely dry out skin out a bit so use with a moisturizer!
